Deadliest Diseases: Chiropractic’s Place Fighting the Diabetes Epidemic

There’s an epidemic that’s affecting 9.4% of the population of the USA. In 2015, the American Diabetes Association said 30.3 million Americans had diabetes. That same year, it was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, killing more people than breast cancer and AIDS combined. This condition also nearly doubles your chance of having a heart attack. However, there is much you can do to improve your health, before or after a diabetes diagnosis, including chiropractic care.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where cells are no longer able to produce the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, called insulin. Insulin can be taken as a supplement, however lifestyle changes are usually recommended and necessary to manage the condition. There is also the risk of insulin resistance, where the body isn’t using the hormone properly.

The American Diabetes Association says, “At first, the pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time your pancreas isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose levels normal…When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems: Right away, your cells may be starved for energy. Over time, high blood glucose levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.”

Because of this, diabetes can cause serious complications with the skin, eyes and nerve damage, which is called diabetic neuropathy.

The Goal of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is about giving your body its full potential through restoring nervous system function. When the body/brain communication is reopened with chiropractic adjustment, the body can innately begin to heal the deeper issues and the potential for health and wellness is improved.

This principle can be applied to care for diabetics. An article in Science Daily said that they have discovered “glucagon producing cells in the pancreas, can change identity and adapt so that they do the job for their neighbouring damaged or missing insulin cells.” How amazing is that? While researchers are trying to develop applications for this knowledge to cure diabetes, it underlines once again the amazing power of the body to heal itself.

Wichita chiropractor Dr. Ryan Dopps said, “Chiropractic is the best way to get to the innate intelligence to the cellular tissue. When you look at the subluxation, that’s going to block the nerve flow. The process of the mental impulse coming down the spine from inside and out to the body, that (subluxation) is going to stop that process from happening, or diminish it, decrease it, mess it up, distort it. As we’ve said before, chiropractic has nothing to with pain and pain relief. It has everything to do with getting that innate expression of life getting out to the cells.” (Artifical Intelligence vs. Innate Intelligence)
