Breathe More Fresh Air

We truly cannot survive without oxygen. And fresh air from the great outdoors is a wonderful way to get it. Listen to Dr. Ryan Dopps talk about the multiple ways being outside and oxygen benefits our health.

The fresh oxygen generated by plant life strengthens our immune system. An article in the Journal of Restorative Medicine, (Volume 8, Number 1, 15 February 2019) gives several examples of studies exploring the role of oxygen in the immune system. The article states, “Most bacteria and viruses thrive in low-oxygen environments…The increased oxygen provided by hyperbaric oxygen therapy enhances the bacteria-killing ability of white blood cells, reduces edema, and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into affected areas.”

Fresh air and time in nature also exposes you to good bacteria, which can give you a healthier gut microbiome. Researchers at Ohio State University studied the gut health of babies on rural farms.

To quote the Science Daily article, “”Good hygiene is important, but from the perspective of our immune systems, a sanitized environment robs our immune systems of the opportunity to be educated by microbes. Too clean is not necessarily a good thing,” said the study’s co-lead author Zhongtang Yu, a professor of microbiology in Ohio State’s Department of Animal Sciences and a member of the university’s Food Innovation Center.”

Want to be healthier? Go explore nature, get a little muddy, take a deep breath of fresh air and smell the roses.
